Thanksgiving Tips

Welcome to the week of Thanksgiving! It might just be my favorite holiday– with all the good spirit and good FOOD, how could it not be?

I was recently asked what I do to save both time and money during the holiday season. Part of my strategy this year is to remind myself of the old adage, less is more. As I was planning my menu for Thanksgiving, I caught myself redhanded. Katie, you do not need to have 5 appetizers– one great one will do the trick! As a host, it’s easy to drift into the dangerous territory of overestimating a crowd’s appetite, but if you plan a few days ahead of time you allow yourself time to be realistic.

With your menu planned, write up a thorough shopping list so that you’re armed when you enter the grocery store. Go early in the week to avoid that panicky day-before shopping that can lead to overbuying, overspending and ultimately, waste.

Another option to save on both fronts–time and money– is to go the potluck route! They’re a fun way to have everyone pitch in and Thanksgiving is a holiday that people won’t be turned off by that.
